2019 Lighting Trends | Bright Ideas with M & M Lighting

I’ve been working with Amy Margolin of M&M Lighting since the early days of Laura U Interior Design. When I first met Amy, I was impressed with her fantastic eye and knowledge about all things lighting. She always has the perfect light fixture in mind for our Classically Current interiors! With her keen eye for trends that will last and a deep understanding of the Houston market, it’s no wonder she’s become my trusted lighting expert.

Amy has worked with us to select gorgeous lighting for many of our client projects, as well as for my own home. (She selected a stunning chandelier for my fall fete and helped with the install at my spring soiree!) She’s one of our trusted receivers who ensures the fixtures are in picture perfect condition when they arrive. She even recommends installers. This was a huge help when it came to installing the Carayes light in my breakfast nook. She made the entire process effortless!

Today, I’m thrilled to have Amy on the journal to share more about M&M Lighting and the latest lighting trends for 2019. Take it away, Amy!

2019 Lighting Trends

M&M Lighting is a third-generation, family-owned lighting showroom here in Houston. We work with those in the trade, as well as with the public. I’m so excited to be here to talk about lighting trends for 2019. Much like the fashion industry, the home furnishings industry is fast-paced. Designs change quickly. Determining what will look beautiful in your home for years to come is essential. Today, I want to talk about three trends I think are relevant to you and your home that will have lasting power. Matte Finishes

One of the trends we’ve been repeatedly seeing is matte finishes, which I think stems from the plumbing industry. During the 1980s, polished brass was the finish of choice for many fixtures. Then there was a shift in the early 2000s to polished nickel. The matte finishes, like black and white, that we’re seeing now are a reaction to those shifts.

A matte white finish is beautiful, especially when paired with another finish like brass. This two-tone combination is hot right now! The matte white finish on this Mitzi wall sconce gives the piece a contemporary flair. And on this layered Mitzi wall sconce the matte white finish adds a soft, industrial feel. Classic matte black is another fabulous color that’s trending for matte finishes. From wall sconces to over-sized chandeliers and even ceiling fans, we’re seeing this color everywhere! What’s great about matte black is that it will never go out-out style and it’s a color you can use anywhere in your home.

Art Deco Inspired Designs

Over the past few years, we’ve seen a lot of mid-century modern style pieces trending. Looking forward to 2019 and beyond, Art Deco inspired pieces are beginning to take center stage.

What is the Art Deco style?

The Art Deco style means luxury and glamour. It’s about details, quality, and using rare, exotic materials. Another defining aspect of the Art Deco style is geometric forms. There are some great pieces in the lighting industry right now that reflect this growing trend. This fabulous up-and-down wall sconce is all about the shine. The polished nickel paired with black accents adds glamour and the geometric shape is definitely eye-catching! It would be beautiful in an hallway or a powder bathroom. These gorgeous marble and brass inlaid table lamps are a great example of the Art Deco lighting trend. It’s a sophisticated, timeless combination that instantly adds a touch of glamour. Table lamps are great because you can easily add them into your home no matter what the current interior style is. This stunning Robert Abbey table lamp uses real alabaster with beautiful brass inlays. It’s a elegant combination that would be perfect for a master bedroom or a home office. I love this table lamp with a classic marble base. The antique nickel base features a beautiful starburst design. The modern interpretation of this traditional table lamp would look great in a study or a library.

Bohemian Style

This next trend is one I know you’re going to love – Bohemian style light fixtures! These fixtures are made with natural materials, like wicker and rattan, and usually come in neutral color tones. Bohemian style lights are a fun way to bring the outdoors in and add visual texture to a space.

This style has traditionally been used in coastal living, but that’s not the case anymore. We’re seeing it in urban environments mixed with modern architecture. I love this coco bead Patricia chandelier for a dining room. And this Marjorie chandelier in a white finish is perfect for above a kitchen table.
