Last week we introduced you to Dunstan, one of our latest interior design projects and our first to photograph after lockdown. When our clients purchased the home, they were wanting a much different look than their previous residence. Their former home was traditional, evoking an Old World sensibility with a European influence. For their new home, they wanted a modern look, sleek finishes, and a design that honored their beloved art collection.
At purchase, the home was thoughtfully staged in a contemporary style. The clients loved many of the finishes and actually kept the cabinetry and some light fixtures. But they felt the home needed warmth. They love to entertain and were eager to invite guests into a space that was welcoming, comforting, and full of the objects they’ve been collecting over the years.
The Breakfast Room
With windows on two sides, the breakfast area is sun-soaked for most of the day. The staged design took advantage of this with a white Saarinen-style table and matching chairs. Our design team felt contrast would add a modern flourish. We collaborated with the talented team at Iron Accents to design the base and selected a marble top from Designer Stone. The marble is a lovely complement to both the iron base and the wooden legs of the surrounding Cantoni chairs.
The Formal Dining Room
Arguably one of our favorite spaces in the home, the formal dining is one of the first rooms seen from the entry. At sale, the round table mirrored the candelabra chandelier, but seemed somewhat cramped for a capacity of eight. In our new design, a rectangular table utilizes more space, seating guests comfortably. This stunning table from Bontempi Casa is made of 1.6″ of solid walnut with a natural edge finish. It is spectacular!
The Kitchen
Being at the heart of the home, the kitchen features a lot of that warmth the clients were hoping for. The cactus-colored chairs from Lawson Fenning remind the homeowners of Santa Fe, where they have a second residence. We upholstered the stools in leatherette from Wolf Gordon. The subdued hue is soft and inviting, a welcome change from the contemporary chrome of the staged design.
The Living Room
Previously a monochromatic sitting area, the living room has taken new life, literally. Plants add a lively touch to tan Barcelona chairs. Pops of crimson and marine blue dot around the room, while a modern cocktail table from Roberta Schilling anchors it all together.
In this opposing view, the cocktail table really comes into view. Another table, the circular spindle of a side table, is from Currey and Company. Its texture really sets it apart and contrasts beautifully with the organic shapes of the painting behind it. From Houston-artist, Terrell James, the artwork really flows with the relaxing energy of the space.
You can see, just in the corner a pair of nesting tables in rustic pine from Mr. Brown London. Sadly, what you cannot feel is this fabulous rug! From Carol Piper, one of our favorite rug sources in Houston, this rug’s wool knotting feels divine underfoot.
