When you think about your home’s exterior design, front doors aren’t usually the first thing that comes to mind. We tend to think about front doors in terms of their practical purpose – to let guests in and out. But your front door is actually one of the most important elements of your home.
It not only enhances your home’s beauty and adds to the curb appeal, but it’s the first impression anyone has of your home. Your front door sets the tone for the style of the rest of your home and since it’s the only thing most people see, it’s important to think about.
When you’re deciding on the perfect color for your front door, here are the three most important things you should keep in mind.
1. The style of your home
It’s important to consider the style of your home, as well as the surrounding exterior colors. You want to make sure the colors work together to create a cohesive exterior. Though I’ve never been one for design rules, there are certain colors that tend to work better with specific style homes than others.
For example, a Moroccan style home would pair beautifully with a brightly colored door, but a pastel door doesn’t really lend itself to a traditional Tudor style home.
2. The personality of you and your family
If you aren’t someone who loves bright colors, you may prefer to use a muted hue or darker color. A dark gray or navy are great alternatives if you don’t want to use a classic brown. If you get a lot of natural light in the front of your home, you might choose a more open concept door with lots of glass to let more light in. And of course, you can always use your front door as a way to add a pop of color to the exterior.
Your front door is something you can dress up for the holidays, personalize and even use as the focal point of your landscaping. It has a lot of power and can be used to make a big statement about you and your family’s personality.
3. A preview of your home
Your front door will be the first impression your guests have of your home, so you want to make it a good one! Front doors have the ability to make your guests feel warm and welcome so they feel right at home. They can also feel very grand and proper like you’re going to be transported back in time when you talk through the door. They can be traditional, contemporary or even playful. There are so many styles, colors and ways you can add personality to your front door.
