Kohler Co. products in a bathroom at Mountain Lane Show House

Kohler Co. is one of the most recognized names in American plumbing, with a fascinating history that spans more than a century and a product line that reaches across nearly every corner of the kitchen and bath. Homeowners associate the brand with familiarity, reliability, and timeless designs they know will support their homes seamlessly for years to come. Designers value the brand for efficacy, innovative design, exceptional craftsmanship, and adaptability to many different eras. Its collections are broad, its finishes are versatile, and its products can support a wide range of residential interiors, from transitional homes to more contemporary spaces.

That range explains, in part, why Kohler has appeared across several Laura U Design Collective projects over the years. In some homes, the brand has contributed standout fixtures in highly visible spaces like the kitchen or primary bath. In others, Kohler plumbing has been used throughout the residence to reinforce continuity and ensure quality from room to room. Looking back through the LUDC archives, we hope projects like North Boulevard, Mountain Lane, and University Place give homeowners a useful lens through which to explore such an impactful brand.

A Brief Look at Kohler Co.

Founded in Wisconsin in the late nineteenth century, Kohler has grown from a small manufacturing company into one of the most recognizable brands in plumbing. Over the decades, the company has expanded far beyond bathtubs and basic fixtures, developing a broad portfolio that includes faucets, sinks, tubs, toilets, shower systems, and kitchen products. Even as styles and technologies have changed, Kohler has persisted by continuing to balance performance with high design.

That balance is part of what has made the brand so relevant throughout its life. Plumbing fixtures might seem merely like technical necessities, but they’re among the most frequently used elements in the home, and they often have an outsized visual presence in kitchens and bathrooms. A faucet, sink, or freestanding tub may seem like a small decision at first, but once installed, these pieces shape the look, feel, and function of a room every single day.

What Makes Kohler Exceptional for Homeowners and Designers Alike

One of Kohler’s greatest strengths is the breadth of its product line. Some homeowners are drawn to the brand for its classic and understated offerings, while others look to Kohler for more distinctive finishes and silhouettes. This versatility makes it easier to create consistency throughout a home without making every space feel the same.

Kohler also appeals to homeowners because its products are so dependable. Kitchens and baths are high-traffic spaces, and the fixtures selected for them need to look stunning in styled photos while also withstanding daily use. When homeowners invest in kitchen and bath updates, they seek products that feel current but will not quickly feel dated. Kohler occupies that middle ground between trend-conscious and enduring so homeowners and designers can feel confident when they shop for plumbing fixtures.

Another reason the brand continues to resonate is that its collections work across many different design styles. In one home, a Kohler fixture may support a more traditional, historic, or transitional aesthetic. In another, it may feel crisp, contemporary, or architectural. That flexibility is especially valuable for homeowners who want spaces that feel personal rather than tied too closely to a single “moment”.

At Laura U Design Collective, we have certainly found that to be true across a wide range of spaces. We have used Kohler fixtures in an Aspen show house, a historic 1920s home, and a California cool remodel.

A Look Back at Kohler Products in LUDC Projects

North Boulevard Show House

North Boulevard Kitchen

One of the earliest and most memorable examples of Kohler in the LUDC archives comes from our North Boulevard Show House. Kohler fixtures appeared throughout the home, including the kitchen and several bathrooms. In an interview published during the project, Kohler representative Lori Smith spoke about both the products themselves and the amount of planning required to install them properly. Discussing the project with LUDC founder Laura Umansky, Smith explains that plumbing selections should never be made at the very end because they affect construction, cabinetry, rough-in locations, and sometimes even electrical planning.

North Boulevard laundry and bathroom

The bathrooms at North Boulevard included Kohler’s thin-wall freestanding tubs. At the time, Smith pointed to details like one-piece construction, slotted overflows, material-matched drains, and a crushed stone and resin material designed to naturally retain heat while withstanding constant water exposure. Those features made the tubs notable not only for how they looked, but also for how they were built. In a bathroom, a freestanding tub takes up visual and physical space, so it needs to justify both, which these did!

The kitchen is equally awash (see what we did there) with Kohler fixtures. There, a Kohler Vault Apron Front sink was paired with the Tournant semi-pro faucet in polished nickel. Together, these two Kohler selections made a highly practical workspace feel polished and tailored, which can be hard to achieve with truly functional fixtures. The sink was chosen in part because it combined the look of a farmhouse sink with stainless steel construction, and because its shortened apron made installation easier with standard cabinetry.

Working with Kohler From the Beginning

North Boulevard also made clear how much must happen before these products are installed. Inspiration is important but so is execution. Our design team was on the same page with Kohler from Day One, but there was much for us to solve together before we revealed the remodeled home.

In the original interview, Smith explained that the team had to verify shower valves, plan the plumbing for freestanding tubs, account for special fixture requirements, and prepare for products like a wall-mounted toilet before construction was complete. Homeowners don’t always see that part, but it often determines whether the final result feels seamless or thrown together. That’s why working with a company that’s willing to be collaborative is so important.

Mountain Lane Show House

Mountain Lane gave us a different way to work with Kohler. This Aspen show house was renovated to support a busy family, frequent entertaining, and everyday life in a mountain setting. The home was taken down to the studs and reworked extensively, so every major selection had to perform well and suit the way the house would actually be used. That included the plumbing fixtures, which are as hard-working as they are aesthetically distinctive.

The kitchen was one of the most significant transformations in the home. It was expanded, re-centered, and designed to function as a true gathering space. In that room, we selected the Kohler Artifacts Pot Filler, Kohler Tournant Faucet, and Kohler Cairn Sink, pairing them with Monogram appliances. These selections made sense because the kitchen needed to perform under real-life conditions. The pot filler supports cooking at the range. The faucet and sink are part of a work area used daily for prep, cleanup, and entertaining.

The primary bath called for a different set of selections. There, we used the Kohler Purist Faucet, Kohler Kathryn Sink, and Kohler Purist Floor-Mount Bath Filler. These products helped define the bath without requiring unnecessary ornament. The Purist line, in particular, worked well because the forms are simple and direct. In the brushed moderne brass finish, the faucet brought in a stronger metal presence without competing with the other materials in the room. The floor-mount bath filler also made sense alongside the tub because it gave that area a complete, intentional look.

What stands out about Mountain Lane is that Kohler was used in two rooms with very different settings and demands. In the kitchen, the fixtures had to support cooking, cleanup, and heavy daily use. In the primary bath, the selections needed to work with the scale and layout of the room while keeping the overall look consistent with the rest of the house.

University Place

University Place kitchen

Located in Houston’s West University neighborhood, this home was redesigned for clients who had moved from California and wanted interiors that felt more aligned with their lifestyle and point of view. The original home was bright and attractive, but the interiors felt more transitional than the clients wanted. Our goal was to shift the house toward something more casual, layered, and California cool.

Because this was a whole-home transformation, continuity mattered a great deal. Every room needed its own personality, but the house still had to feel connected. We used Kohler plumbing fixtures throughout University Place, which helped create that connection across the kitchen and baths. In a project like this, that kind of consistency matters immensely. When the finishes, lighting, furnishings, and millwork are all being reconsidered, the plumbing fixtures should support the same direction rather than interrupting it.

Take the kitchen, for example. Although we did not completely change the layout, we reworked the island, cabinetry, and countertops. The updated island included an apron-front sink, which gave the room a stronger focal point and better supported the new design direction. The kitchen also included other major changes like a new backsplash, reworked millwork, and a custom vent hood. In that context, the plumbing fixtures had to feel resolved and dependable. Kohler worked well here because the products fit naturally into a kitchen that was being updated visually but still needed to function well every day.

Working with a Design Firm Ensures Every Selection is Made Well

Laura U Design Collective team

Working with a design team helps ensure that every selection is made well because good results depend on the quality of the products as well as ordering them at the right time, in the right order, in the right volume, in the right finish, and so much more. Put simply, good results require excellent coordination.

As Lori Smith noted during our North Boulevard Show House interview, plumbing fixtures like shower valves, freestanding tubs, and wall-mounted pieces must be considered early, alongside cabinetry, electrical, and other construction details. The same is true of tile, lighting, hardware, furnishings, and window treatments.

While homeowners can absolutely make many of these decisions themselves, a full-service design firm understands how concept development connects to procurement, delivery, installation, vendor communication, and any alterations that must happen along the way. When all of those moving parts are coordinated well, the finished home feels seamless, supportive, and specially-made for you!
